Mining services company Rosond has teamed up with Tyre Management Company Otraco Southern Africa to help improve access to water for the Steve Biko settlement in Shongoane Village, Lephalale. There are approximately 25 000 people living in and around the Steve Biko settlement, and the community has long struggled due to a lack of available water structures.
In consultation with Chief/Kgosi Shongoane, Rosond and Otraco have therefore combined their respective efforts to install a borehole. For Rosond, this is in line with their commitment to benefitting communities wherever they operate. “As far as possible, we look for the chance to translate new opportunities for Rosond into opportunities for the communities in which we are active, so that our growth in turn benefits them,” says Ricardo Cravo Ribeiro, Managing Director for Rosond.
Rosond has therefore put their expertise to work in drilling the hole, while Otraco is financing the cost of the borehole mechanism. “Otraco is proud to be associated with Grootegeluk Mine and the surrounded communities,” says Otraco Country Manager, André Bode. “As clean water is a whole family concern, Otraco decided to support and to help end the water crisis and restore hope. Finding water is a daily challenge and … we can hopefully lift this burden. Our involvement offers us the opportunity to provide a reliable and safe water source to help those communities to have a sustainable future.”
