Safety Manager – Exploration Drilling
Location: Head Office: Midrand with frequent travel to exploration drilling operations across Limpopo and the Northern Cape
We are seeking an experienced Safety Manager: Exploration Drilling to lead health and safety across our surface and underground exploration drilling operations.
Reporting to the Group Head of Safety, the successful candidate will drive the implementation of Rosond’s Safety Strategy by strengthening risk management, embedding a proactive safety culture, leading incident investigations and promoting continuous improvement across multiple operational sites.
The role requires regular travel and close collaboration with operational management, clients, contractors and site safety teams to ensure that all exploration drilling activities are conducted safely, responsibly and in compliance with legislative and client requirements.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Lead health and safety across Rosond’s exploration drilling operations.
- Implement and support the execution of the Rosond Safety Strategy.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through visible leadership and regular site engagement.
- Facilitate risk assessments and strengthen critical risk management processes.
- Monitor critical controls and high-risk activities.
- Lead safety audits, inspections and legal compliance programmes.
- Conduct incident investigations and ensure effective implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
- Monitor safety performance and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Coach, mentor and develop Safety Officers and site safety teams.
- Build effective relationships with operational leaders, clients, contractors and regulatory authorities.
- Support emergency preparedness, contractor management and project mobilisation activities.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will possess:
- National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Occupational Health & Safety, Mining, Engineering, Risk Management or a related discipline.
- Incident Investigation, Baseline Risk Assessment and Bowtie Risk Assessment training.
- Valid South African Driver’s Licence.
- A minimum of 10 years’ operational safety management experience within mining, exploration drilling or a similar heavy industrial environment.
- Experience managing safety across multiple operational sites.
- Proven experience in:
- Risk management and critical control implementation.
- Incident investigations and root cause analysis.
- Audits, inspections and legal compliance.
- Leading and developing safety teams.
- Client, contractor and stakeholder engagement.
Knowledge and Skills
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Sound knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
- Strong understanding of Safety Management Systems and legal compliance requirements.
- Excellent risk management and incident investigation capability.
- Strong analytical, planning and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing ability.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
